At age 80, Jeanne Miller learned she had a skill set that few in her age range possess. Five years later, she has a drawer full of medals, a pocket full of memories, and a newfound love for competition. But this story isn’t about running—it’s about seeing the world clearly again after cataract surgery.

Flying Blind

Dan Kookoothe has been flying planes since he was 14 years old. But a few years ago, his ability to see well enough to fly safely started slipping away due to cataracts—a condition where protein deposits cloud the natural lens of the eye.

“I knew I had cataracts, but they weren’t too bad until the one in my left eye became so bad that I couldn’t see anything out of it,” Dan recalls. “That eye was useless, so I went to a local eye doctor for surgery.”

The first surgery Dan underwent was traditional cataract surgery using a scalpel. While his vision initially improved, it wasn’t long before he started experiencing bothersome floaters. “The doctor basically said there was nothing else they could do,” Dan says. “I wasn’t happy with that at all.”

When his other eye began to deteriorate, Dan did his research and found Rosanova Eye Center, where Dr. Mark A. Rosanova offered an advanced alternative: bladeless, computer-controlled, image-guided, laser-assisted cataract surgery.

The Rosanova Method

Dr. Rosanova, a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist, has developed a unique pre-treatment protocol that combines cutting-edge diagnostic technology, precise surgical planning, and the latest intraocular lenses (IOLs) for superior outcomes.

The procedure utilizes two groundbreaking tools:

  • Alcon’s Verion™ Image Guided System – Customizes every aspect of surgery, from pre-surgical measurements to exact IOL placement.
  • LenSx® Femtosecond Laser – Delivers unmatched precision by making tissue incisions at a speed of one-quadrillionth of a second, reducing collateral damage and improving safety.

This technology allows for perfectly rounded openings, optimal lens positioning, and the ability to correct astigmatism during the same procedure. According to Dr. Rosanova, using his method, up to 97% of patients receiving advanced lenses achieve 20/20 vision or better, compared to around 50% with standard protocols.

A Brighter Outcome

Dan decided to have Dr. Rosanova perform laser-assisted cataract surgery on his right eye—and the difference was night and day.

“I wish I had gone to him for the first eye,” Dan says. “The process was fast, easy, and simple. I see great now and have never had any floaters or problems in that eye. If I had to do it all over again, I’d definitely choose laser surgery over traditional surgery.”

Beyond Cataracts – Treating Glaucoma Without Drops

Another patient, Walter Ciak, struggled for years with glaucoma, requiring multiple daily eyedrops that left his eyes constantly red and irritated. Dr. Rosanova recommended Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT), a quick, non-invasive procedure that reduces intraocular pressure by stimulating natural drainage in the eye.

The result? Walter no longer needs eyedrops, his eye pressure has normalized, and his eyes look and feel healthy again.

Personalized Eye Care That You Deserve

Dr. Rosanova has built his practice on delivering precise, personalized results for cataract and glaucoma patients. With advanced technology, years of experience, and a patient-first approach, he continues to help people see the world more clearly—and live life to the fullest.
